I think I always wanted to try Fly Fishing from the first time I saw it on the ‘Out of Town’ with Jack Hargreaves. I think it was the simplicity and elegance of it all. With the expert placing of the fly combined with the beauty of the Chalk Rivers like the Test.
Back in those days (1970’s) finding out about this type of fishing and where it could done. That’s not including the cost. Larry Page (of Google) was very much a toddler back then. So No Google.
Time marched on and I found other things to do. See my post/Page ‘How my Fishing journey started’
And we must not forget seeing Paul Whitehouse on ‘Gone Fishing’ He made fly fishing, poetry in motion. It was great to watch.
By this time I was Course Fishing with my son Zico, He was using Method and me my float fishing the margins with my Centerpins (Another story). Then the Family and I went to Bala, Wales in our caravan.
I then stumbled into the fishing tackle shop ‘Siop Y Gwyniad’ run by Barry Evans. I can’t thank him enough organising us a Gillie, Adrian. Loaned and sold new and second hand everything my son and I needed for our first ever fly fishing trip.
After some basic training on a small reservoir that supposedly had trout in it. We set off to the Dee.

I think looking at these pictures. No more to be said, other than it was a fantastic day and place to start fly fishing. Only one Grayling caught by our Gillie on his first cast. And nothing for my son and I.
